The concentration anime

Map of the CSP circuit in the anime.

The Sohoku High Bicycle Club holds an annual training camp during which participants need to bike 1000km in four days in spring, using whatever schedule or tactics they want. The objective of the camp is to make sure that all the members of the Inter High team are fit to participate while overcoming 'handicaps imposed either on the bike, or banning usual tactics, or both. If any member cannot complete the assigned 1000km, they will be dropped from the team unless under special circumstances like injuries or illnesses. In order to prevent cheating and to allow racers to keep track of their and others' progress, sensors are installed on everyone's bicycles. These sensors record the number of laps, and therefore distance, that each person has biked. The numbers are displayed on an electronic board at the starting point. If two riders finished the same distance, especially during interval races, after the second day, the leaderboard switches to laps and time mode rather than in order of seniority.

Location[]

The event is held at the Cycling Sports Park (CSP), a 5 km course designed specifically for cyclists. It is located in Kanagawa, Shizuoka prefecture. The location is about 20km from Hakone Academy.

Known Events[]

2 Years Pre-Series[]

This edition of the training camp was held two years before the main storyline and its briefly shown in the story. So far, its known that Jin Tadokoro had to drop out on the second day after collapsing in the middle of the race, while Shingo Kinjou managed to finish the 1000km in the fourth day.

1 Year Pre-Series[]

This edition of the training camp was held two years before the main storyline and its briefly shown in the story. It is understood that Shingo, Jin, and Yusuke Makishima managed to complete the 1000km, as they were shown as part of the Inter High team eventually. The first-year Kimitaka Koga is so far the only one who had his results shown during this year's training camp, managing to complete 980km. The other first-years, Hajime Aoyagi, Junta Teshima and Taniguchi did not manage to finish it.

Year 1[]

On a bus to the camp with the club, Sakamichi Onoda gets carsick and Shingo decides to leave him behind at a rest stop for Toji Kanzaki's van to pick up, so that he gets the time he needs to recover. While waiting for Toji, Sakamichi tries to buy some water from one of the stop's vending machines, but discovers that he left his wallet in the bus. There, mets a student from Hakone Academy who presented himself as Sangaku Manami gave him a water bottle after the latter nearly pass out due to the heat and hydration. Once Toji gets Onoda in the stop and everyone arrives at the CSP, Shunsuke Imaizumi hustles the first-years to get dressed, as they have 20 minutes to check out the course before training starts.

Shingo assembles all the members to announce the schedule for the camp. He also explains why certain members are absent; Gou Sakurai has a cold, and second-years Kimitaka and Taniguchi chose not to participate because they experienced the camp as first-years and knew they could not complete it. Shingo tells the members that the schedule is simple because all they have to do is cycle 1000km, or 200 laps, in four days (equivalent to cycling from Chiba to the Northern end of Kyushu). He then explains the sensors on the bike and the display board that will track everyone's progress. Shingo calls Shunsuke and Shoukichi Naruko aside to explain the special conditions they will be cycling under. Toji altered Shunsuke and Shoukichi's bikes; Shoukichi's Pinarello had its drop handlebar replaced with a mountain bike straight bar, and Shunsuke's Scott had its gear shifter levers replaced with just standard brakes, with no shifters, which means he'll be stuck in one gear setting. Use of the lower handlebars on a drop style is an important part of Shoukichi's sprinting technique, and Shunsuke's calculating use of gear changes is an integral part of his racing strategy, so these limitations make cycling more difficult for them. Shingo tells them that these modifications were made in order to help them become stronger.

First Day[]

Once the training camp started, Yusuke asks Shingo why he didn't have Sakamichi's bike altered as well. He knows Shingo hasn't finalized the Inter High team roster because of high hopes that Sakamichi could become strong enough to qualify, but that he needs more training and riding experience to get that far, much like Shunsuke and Shoukichi. Shingo reveals that he actually did, but just chose not to tell him about it and informs Yusuke in detail. Sakamichi immediately notices the effects of the secret changes to his bicycle and becomes confused. He is disheartened because the climbing he usually enjoys has become difficult to endure. Terufumi Sugimoto passes Shunsuke, Shoukichi, and Sakamichi, as they are struggling with the limitations placed on their best skills. On his fifth lap, Sakamichi questions his love of slopes and ability as a climber until Yusuke pulls up. He tries to hint Sakamichi to the problem but it doesn't work, so as he's forbidden to tell him more, he decides that he's "just talking to himself" and Sakamichi just happens to be standing there. As a simple demonstration, he takes off his front wheel and hands it to Sakamichi to show how light it is, then does the same with Sakamichi's, which in comparison is like a lead weight. He reveals that the wheels on Sakamichi's bike have been replaced with old, heavy ones that are also unbalanced, and unsuited for climbing. Yusuke recognizes the wheels as being from an old bike in the club room. Yusuke explains that for climbers, heavy wheels are like binding the rider's limbs. He briefly describes his past, in which he practiced hard to prove those who mocked his style wrong, and then tells Sakamichi that when you can't do the one thing you're good at, you must overcome that disadvantage if you want to accomplish something. As Yusuke rides off, he gives Sakamichi a final piece of advice, telling him to lower his gear by two. Sakamichi finds that while he must pedal faster this way, the strain on him is considerably less.

Shingo notices the change in Sakamichi's cycling and approaches Yusuke, telling him not to give him any unnecessary help. He wants Sakamichi to develop experience in puzzling out such things for himself. Yusuke agrees that Sakamichi is terrible at that, but responds that he seems like the type that does better with support. When Shingo goes on ahead, Yusuke scoffs with a smile and says that Shingo knew that he would in fact tell Sakamichi eventually. Later that evening, when everyone is going to sleep, Shingo remarks that Sakamichi is doing better than he expected. After the first day of the training camp, the positions were:

Second Day[]

Eat up kiddo

Jin's Deluxe Special Burger.

The second day of the training camp began at breakfast with some of the first and second-years gawking at Jin's eating habits, scooping masses of honey onto sandwiches, giving the impression that he's actually a bear. Jin notices that Sakamichi is only eating a plain sandwich, and approaches him with his "Deluxe Special Burger." He points out that cycling is a sport that takes a lot of energy, physical strength, stamina, and concentration, which is why Sakamichi needs to eat a bigger breakfast. When the members prepare to begin their day of cycling, Shingo reminds them to plan intervals according to their abilities and stay hydrated, as it's going to be a scorcher that day. As Terufumi noticed that Shingo is not on his bike, Shunsuke and Shoukichi got frustrated by his statement that he will begin 30 minutes after everyone else, as that is an interval that fits his "condition." Shingo is 50km ahead of both of them, so they feel that he is looking down on them. Shunsuke and Shoukichi notice each other's frustration and exchange banter about it. Shunsuke irritates Shoukichi by mentioning that Jin is even farther ahead than Shingou and saying that he can't catch up.

Once Sakamichi reaches 250km, he stops to take his second interval. Terufumi is also resting at this time, and he offers Sakamichi some energy jelly drinks and water. Jin has stopped as well, and he notices that Sakamichi and Terufumi are both on their second interval, Hajime and Junta have taken one each, but Shunsuke and Shoukichi have not stopped at all since they began. As they continue to pick at each other, Shunsuke suggests that Shoukichi is reaching his limit and should take a break, but when he reaches for his water bottle, he drops it. He stops to pick it up, but is suddenly hit with fatigue. Shoukichi stops as well and retrieves Shunsuke's water bottle, telling his teammate to swallow his pride and just take the water bottle from him. He adds that they should focus on completing the 1000km instead of competing with the upperclassmen.

Shunsuke, Shoukichi and Sakamichi continue cycling after sunset, when at least it is cooler outside. Sakamichi thinks about how riding with them motivates him to do his best to keep up with both. In the end of second day, those were the results:

Placement Name Kilometers Completed Status

Thanks imaizumi

Sakamichi passes out in the bathtub.

Once the three have finished for the night, they go inside to bathe. Shoukichi momentarily falls asleep in the bath, lowering his face into the water. Shunsuke doesn't make a move to help him, but he didn't really need to because Shoukichi pops back up saying it would be "uncool" if he drowned in the bath. Still, Shoukichi accuses Shunsuke of just watching when he could have been helping. Shunsuke retorted that it would have been better if Shoukichi just died, but his thoughts reveal that he just doesn't have the energy to help. Shoukichi inquires after Sakamichi's whereabouts, and it turns out that Sakamichi also fell asleep and went underwater.

After the trio exits the bath, Shunsuke, who is a few steps ahead, overhears Shingo talking to Miki Kanzaki on his cell phone and hangs up just as Shoukichi and Sakamichi come in range. It turns out that two magazines, Cycle Time and Asada News, wanted to interview Sohoku since they are representing Chiba and one of the teams competing at the Inter High. Although Shingo already instructed Miki to tell them that they can't do so while at camp, he asks Shoukichi if he wants to be interviewed for the magazines, since he is known for liking to stand out. Shoukichi declines the offer, stating that he wants to focus on the camp and surpass Jin.

Third Day[]

Sakamichi wakes up and sets out early on the third day of camp before anyone else. He recognizes that he is in last place at 390km, and that he has only two days to complete the remaining 610km. In order to catch up at his slower speed, he has to put in more time than everyone else. Shingo watches him from above for at least one full lap and notes he's getting faster. Sakamichi notices that cycling seems easier than it did over the past two days. He realizes that he is probably adapting to the situation, so he decides to try climbing with a heavier gear. He finds the ascent to be much easier than it was before, so he regains some confidence. Sakamichi notices a bicycle ahead of him, and tries to catch up thinking that it may be Shingo or Yusuke. However, it turns out to be Sangaku, sent by one of the Hakone's cyclists to scout for "a third-year climber that climbs funny" at Sohoku's training camp, expecting him to find Makishima. This is when Sakamichi finds out that Sangaku is a member of the Hakone Academy Bicycle Racing Club. Sangaku asks Sakamichi if he will be competing in the Inter High, but Sakamichi replies that he probably will not make the team. Sangaku is disappointed because he wanted to meet him at the Inter High, so Sakamichi suggests that they have a short race, which he excitedly agrees. Sakamichi also offers to return the water bottle Sangaku previously lent him, but Sangaku is fine with letting him keep it. When Sakamichi continues to protest, Sangaku compromises; if Sakamichi wins this race, he will take the bottle back. He also asks Sakamichi what his first name is and after listening to it he thinks that "Sakamichi" is the perfect name (as it means "slope") and that it matches his name, Sangaku (which means "mountain").

When the race begins, Sangaku pulls ahead, but Sakamichi catches up and keeps up with him. The race is an exciting and fun experience for both of them. Sangaku notices the issue with Sakamichi's wheels and his impressive cadence. Sangaku keeps pulling ahead and Sakamichi uses the dancing technique to push forward and ride side-by-side with Sangaku, who notices that he is only wearing sneakers. Sangaku then accelerates and wins the race.

After the race, Sangaku reflects on how Sakamichi managed to keep up with him even though he wasn't wearing cycling cleats that link a cyclist's feet with their bike's pedals, which transfer energy at least two times more efficiently. After noticing the age of the wheels, Sangaku gives Sakamichi's Kuromori an experimental heft and is surprised to find how heavy they are. Sakamichi's performance in spite of the disadvantages amazes Sangaku. After this, Sangaku prepares to leave, but tells Sakamichi he wants his bottle back when they meet at the summer's Inter High. Sangaku cheerfully cycles away, waving and looking back over his shoulder to tell Sakamichi that it's a promise. Sakamichi had previously thought a beginner like him going to the Inter High was impossible, but after considering his teammates' determination to go and Sangaku's promise, his mindset seems to be changing.

It turns out that Shunsuke and Shoukichi both had similar ideas about waking up early to get some extra laps in the day, but as they bicker about who woke up first, they note that Sakamichi got up way earlier than either of them. After both Shunsuke and Shoukichi reach his teammate on the course, Sakamichi asks how he should go about getting on the Inter High team. Shoukichi says that he doesn't know all the requirements either, but that Sakamichi definitely needs to complete the 1000km if he wants to be considered. Meanwhile, Shingo changes the electronic display board setting from order of seniority to order by number of laps completed. When Sakamichi, Shoukichi, and Shunsuke pass by, they take note of this change. Shoukichi and Shunsuke, like Sakamichi, are getting used to cycling with the limitations placed on their bikes.

The first-year trio is speeding up, and after a while Shunsuke and Shoukichi get to the point where they are only two laps (10km) behind Hajime, who is riding with Junta and keeping a steady pace. Jin remarks that, before the day is over, the first-years and second-years will have a showdown. The first-years pass the second-years on the course, though Shunsuke points out they are still two laps behind; a 10km gap in a real race would be impossible to close, but the difference here is the pacing between the two groups. Shunsuke says that his goal is to overtake everyone, so if the second-years try to get in his way, he will defeat them. Elsewhere, Shingo and Yusuke discuss the first-years growing accustomed to the alterations Kinjou made to their bikes and how much Junta and Hajime have improved over the past year, and that if the first-years underestimate them, they will not be able to win. Junta and Hajime are seen cycling very close to each other at high speeds, even taking a sharp curve under these conditions.

Shunsuke and Shoukichi catch up to Hajime at 735km and Shunsuke tries to pass him, but they're blocked by Junta who tells the first-years that he won't let them get ahead of him and let his second-year teammate go ahead. Shoukichi then explains to Sakamichi that they may have caught up to Hajime, but Junta is still one lap ahead of them, so he is letting Hajime go ahead with a breakaway, which is when one rider pulls ahead of the pack to ride alone. Unless they can pass Hajime, they will be behind both of the second-years once again. Junta tells them that he knew they would catch up at some point, so they devised this strategy against them. Shoukichi thinks it was unwise of them to try to pull ahead of him on a flat road because he is a sprinter, and he prepares to catch up to Hajime quickly. However, Junta cuts him off, and Shoukichi rides into the grass on the side of the road. This worries Sakamichi, but Shoukichi assures him that such tactics are common in road races. Junta insists that the whole thing is just a "game of tag," but it is clearly a serious strategy to prevent the first-years from passing him and Hajime.

It also becomes clear that Junta has an issue with Shunsuke being an "elite" cyclist, as he jokingly talks about how Shunsuke probably prefers expensive tea over cocoa. He also points out some of Shunsuke and Shoukichi's accomplishments as cyclists. Junta reveals that he even competed against Shunsuke in races back when they were in middle school. While Shunsuke was always winning races, Junta was desperately trying to make it to the top too. He couldn't even make it into the top 30, let alone first place, so he realized that he is just an average cyclist. Shoukichi interrupts Junta and speeds ahead, but the group made it to the start of the slope portion of the course, which Shoukichi is weak on. Since Junta has no natural talent for cycling, he decided to make up for this by using strategies, which includes stalling.

Junta taunts the first-years, telling them that they will give up after three laps and take a break for "tea time." Shoukichi responds to Junta's goading by using his sprint climbing technique even though his bike currently lacks lower handlebars. Shoukichi is surprised when Junta easily catches up, but Junta says that this is the obvious outcome since he has been saving his energy. Once they reach the summit, they see how far ahead Hajime is. This is also part of the second-years' strategy to beat the first-years, as it is demoralizing.

Sakamichi is intimidated by Junta's ability to block Shunsuke and Shoukichi's advances, as if there were a "wall" between them. He decides that he has to do something to help, but cannot think of anything. By the time they make it to Junta's promised third lap (in which the first-years will give up), the sun has set. The darkness makes it dangerous to pass, and furthermore Shingo will place a yellow signboard at the start of the circuit to indicate that overtaking is prohibited at night. Junta tells the first-years that they only have 900m left of the lap, so if they can't overtake him by then, they will be stuck behind him according to the rules. According to Junta's plan, Hajime should catch up soon, meaning that the first-years would be 5km behind both of them. The idea of Shunsuke and Shoukichi not making it to the Inter High distresses Sakamichi, and he voices his desire for them both to make it to the Inter High. He tells them that he looks up to them and enjoys cycling with them, and that if they pass Junta, he will do his best to catch up with them. While Sakamichi worries about not having a plan, Shunsuke and Shoukichi reassure him by saying they don't need a plan because Sakamichi's strength simply lies in his cadence.

Ya got good friends, kid

Shoukichi and Naruko encouraging Sakamichi.

Shunsuke and Shoukichi give Sakamichi a push, sending him ahead to face off with Junta on the slope, and follow after him. Initially, it seems that Junta is surprised by Sakamichi's advance, but it turns out that he also predicted this development. Junta says that he will shut down Sakamichi's attack in only 60 seconds. Sakamichi does his best to keep up with Junta, but the second-year remains confident that he has enough energy saved up to beat him. His confidence also stems from the fact that he studied footage of Sakamichi's cycling in the First-Year Welcome Race, as well as his practice with Yusuke, and discovered that Sakamichi's limit for using his full power is 40 seconds. However, when Junta reaches the end of his count and believes he has beaten his opponent, Sakamichi speeds past him. Stunned, Junta thinks it over and realizes that during the past three days of training, Sakamichi's strength and stamina improved beyond his expectations. Greatly encouraged, Shunsuke and Shoukichi speed ahead, leaving Junta behind in a state of shock. When the two catch up to Sakamichi, they quickly support him on either side and prevent him from falling over until he can recover from the climb. Shunsuke tells Sakamichi that he can't give up now because Sakamichi said he wanted to catch up and make it to the Inter High too. Sakamichi's desire to make it to the Inter High together with Shunsuke and Shoukichi has been solidified at this point. Shoukichi puts his arm over Sakamichi's back so he can keep pace with them while not pedaling.

In the meantime, Hajime catches up with Junta, who apologizes for not being able to hold the first-years back. Hajime tells his teammate that they can still make it, and when Junta objects, further emphasizes that they will go to the Inter High together because it's meaningless otherwise. The second-years renew their attack and chase the first-years; Shunsuke notices the noise of crankshafts turning and can see their lights bearing down on them, and warns the others to pick up the pace. At the starting line, Yusuke coasts in to a stop where Shingo and Jin are waiting to see the results of the race the three know must be going on. Shingo says that the person with the best luck will win, while Jin proclaims his confidence in the second-years he trained. The two practiced synchronizing their breathing and movements together, resulting in extremely efficient teamwork and a technique he calls the "synchronized straight twin." With Shunsuke and Shoukichi close beside each other as Shoukichi drafts Sakamichi, the first-years reach the downhill portion of the course so Shoukichi and Shunsuke encourage Sakamichi to speed up despite the darkness.

5 way battle

The first-years and second-years compete on the evening of the third day.

Jin reflects on the hard work Hajime and Junta have put in under his guidance. He told them that willpower and dedication is important when aiming for the goal. In the last 350m, Sakamichi hits a bump and is overtaken by the second-year pair. Shoukichi plans to go back for Sakamichi, but Shunsuke discourages him, pointing out that the second-years are right on their heels. Shoukichi angrily protests, but Shunsuke tells him that Sakamichi wants them to win, and that if Sakamichi still has the willpower, he will catch up. Shunsuke cites Sakamichi's performance in the First-Year Welcome race as proof of his persistence when it comes to chasing others. The second-years are tiring, and Sakamichi has managed to sneak up and stay right behind them; the other first-years can see three headlights behind them, and Shunsuke notes with a smile that once Sakamichi "catches you, he never let's go." Hajime reminds Junta of their promise to compete in the Inter High with Jin, and tells him to think only of the goal ahead. With the gap closed between the two groups, Sakamichi notices that the others have switched to using their lower handlebars (except Naruko, who hunches down as far as he can since his have been removed) and the dancing technique. In a panic because he is being left behind, Sakamichi decides to try using the lower handlebars for the first time. He also uses the dancing technique and manages to catch up with the other four as the last 100m of the course turns into a flat-out sprint. All five competitors fervently aim for victory, and remain neck-to-neck even with only 30m left. However, in the last 5m, Hajime and Junta fall behind the three first-years. Shoukichi crosses the finish line first, followed by Shunsuke and Sakamichi, while the second-years coast to a stop and fall off their bikes in exhaustion and pain; they've blown out their thigh muscles, so their legs are simply refusing to move anymore. Ignorant of this the first-years continue on, thinking that the second-years are following behind.

Junta is desperate to complete the training camp and make it to the Inter High, but Jin embraces the fallen second-years and tells them that they have already done enough. He asks them to retire because if they continue on, they could seriously injure themselves. Jin praises the second-years for their efforts, and the three share a tearful moment at not being able to share Jin's last Inter High. Later, after the first-years have finished riding for the night, Shingo approaches and informs them that the second-years have dropped out of the camp. When the trio goes off to find the second-years, they see that Hajime and Junta's thighs are bandaged; they both pulled leg muscles and can't finish it now. Junta tells Sakamichi that injuries that prevent you from riding for a while are also part of the sport. The younger members begin to be concerned that they are at fault for the second-years' situation, but Junta reminds them that they are the ones that challenged the first-years in the first place. Junta admires the first-years' skills, but admits that not making the team feels like his heart's been ripped out. He places his fist on Shoukichi's chest, telling him that they must support the seniors and win at the Inter High for their and Sohoku's sake. He repeats this motion for Shunsuke and Sakamichi as well. After the third day of the training camp, the positions were:

Fourth Day[]

The rain on the fourth day of training camp makes conditions hazardous for the Sohoku cyclists. Shingo notices that Shunsuke is struggling, both in terms of grip and with wet brakes, but since road races take place no matter what inclement weather may come, he considers it a part of the test. Shingo and Jin are the first to complete the 1000km required of the camp, finishing while Shunsuke and Shoukichi are still 90km behind. Shingo says that the hardships of the training camp will help prepare the first-years for the battlefield that is the Inter High. He reflects on his encounter with Hakone Academy's Juichi Fukutomi during the last competition, and mentions that Hakone Academy is known as a team of six aces. However, Kinjou plans to surpass Hakone Academy and win the Inter High.

Nice guy teshima

Junta approaching Sakamichi on the CSP course.

Yusuke completes the 1000km goal after Shingo and Jin, saying that unexpected things like rain are actually a little enjoyable for an "irregular" like him. At this point, Shunsuke and Shoukichi are 50km behind Yusuke. Both Shunsuke and Shoukichi are frustrated at how difficult the camp was for them, but seem pretty confident in their ability to finish before it is over. Sakamichi, on the other hand, is struggling a bit more. When Shunsuke and Shoukichi only have 30km left, Sakamichi still has 160km left to complete in the eight hours before midnight. Sakamichi is determined to complete the 1000km, but the rain, with wet tires and slippery pedals makes it difficult for him to ride. After another fall, he notices that one of his pedals is broken (which caused the fall when it failed). He thinks of calling out to Shunsuke and Shoukichi as they pass by, but then recognizes that they are competing individually and he shouldn't rely on others. He continues on with pushing uphill and coasting the slopes, but naturally his pace falls drastically. After two laps, by sheer coincidence as no one knew about the pedal, Junta approaches Sakamichi on the course to supply him with his cleats: shoes that connect a cyclist's feet to their pedals, and the matching clipless pedals off of his own bike. He notes that considering Sakamichi's high cadence, it's no wonder a plastic pedal would break.

Shunsuke and Shoukichi complete their 1000km and let themselves fall over wheezing, while Junta and Sakamichi talk as the second-year replaces the pedals. Meanwhile, the rain ends and the sun breaks through the dissipating cloud cover. Sakamichi asks why he would give him his own cleats, and Junta replies that while he was resting, he contemplated how Sakamichi exceeded his expectations despite studying him and began to wonder that if he had a proper racing equipment how fast could he really climb. Junta explains that the cycling shoes both push and pull the pedals, resulting in double the energy being applied to each revolution. Sakamichi immediately feels the effects of the shoes; his bike feels lighter and he accelerates past 40km/h. His spirits are lifted as well, and he thinks about the new paths he has opened up by meeting new people and becoming a cyclist. Late in the night, the rest of the club gathers outside to watch his final laps, and Sakamichi manages to complete the 1000km nine minutes before midnight, to the excitement of the other first-years who are waiting for him at the finish line. After Sakamichi finishes, it is revealed that Terufumi dropped out at 650km because he thought cycling in the rain would be too dangerous.

Year 2[]

First Day[]

During this year, some riders had imposed handicaps in order to build their strength. Junta and Hajime implanted a device on their bicycles that sends a warning if they come within 10m of each other, aiming to separate them and improve their individual performance and mental strengthening. This same device was applied to Issa Kaburagi and Ryuhou Danchiku, who couldn't get close to each other aswell and couldn't rely on his teammate. Eventually, Ryuhou lapped Issa before lecturing him on why his friend is finally feeling alone.

Kimitaka participates of this year's training camp and aims to become one of Sohoku regulars, challenging Junta in the proccess and putting at stake his inter high spot and captain title. At first, Kimitaka challenged Junta to a race which he won, then preceded to bump him off the course. At the end of the first day, only Junta, Hajime, Shunsuke and Shoukichi managed to complete the 50 laps quota. After the first day of the training camp, the positions were:

Second Day[]

Both Kimitaka and Sakamichi started riding early to make up the laps difference in foggy conditions before rejoining the team for proper breakfast. By then, Kimitaka jumped to second, ahead of Hajime and five minutes behind Junta. Hajime and Shoukichi were seen having speed-eating contest, shocking many first-years.

While Junta has reminisced about their failed 40th Inter High campaign, the day skipped to nightfall, where Teshima cleared the air with Kimitaka, and suggested a final race at the no-passing sign. Junta managed to beat Kimitaka on this final race and secure his spot in the regular team for the incoming Inter High.

Fourth Day[]

The action jumped ahead to the fourth day, where Komari Kishigami and Akira Midousuzi gate-crashed the course after the gatekeeper relented to let them through. Sakamichi met Komari, but was unaware of him being a spy to scout them until Komari tried to feel his muscles again, and was caught out by Kimitaka.

In the final sprint to complete 1000km, Shoukichi defeated Shunsuke and they were the first members to complete it.

Year 3[]

Two hours before the Sohoku members arrive at the CSP, Sakamichi gets carsick for the third time at the same place from the previous years. However, different from the other years where he waited for Toji to pick him in the way, he decides to travel the remaining kilometers with his bicycle, stating that this way he won't feel sick in the way. While he rides and sings on his way to the CSP, he meets someone who is laying in the street and worries about the person, thinking he is dead. However the person he met raises his hand and says he is alive and that he does not need to worry, telling him to leave. Sakamichi at first leaves and thinks about how strange is him and that he may be a student from the Hakone Academy judging by his clothes, but he feel that the smell of the plants were mixed with the smell of blood and decided to return.

As Sakamichi returns, the unknown boy says that he is fine, just taking a rest and he ends up showing the blood of his wound. Sakamichi takes care of the student and he reveals that he fell while riding his bicycle. Later, the unknown boy asks Sakamichi where he is going, as the CSP is reserved for the next four days and nobody can visit it during the time. The Sohoku student then reveals that he is Sohoku bicycle club's captain Sakamichi Onoda and that he is going to the CSP because they are going to start a training camp there prior to the Inter High. The unknown student got so surprised that he bluffs asking who he is, while he was aware of who Sakamichi was. He then reveals himself as Tobirama, a super rookie from the Hakone Academy.

In another place, Toji is going with Ryuhou to the CSP with his van. He was under his cares due to Sakamichi's request after noticing how his performance in the training has decreased and he was having problems with his bicycle. On the way to the CSP, Toji thinks they already started and apologizes Ryuhou for being late. The second year said it was fine and asks him if that is not actually good. Toji agrees and tells him that its better for him to stop.

First Day[]

The bus with the students of Sohoku finally arrives the CSP and the first years are amazed with the place and the objects located there. Renta Rokudai asks Tsugunao Kinaka if he never went to that place and he replies that he only went until Saitama and that was his first time around the CSP. As Tsugunao and Renta keeps talking and remembering their moments impressed at the way to the training camp, Toyoka Murakami and Yuichi Furuya stares his teammates. Toyoka is annoyed that both Renta and Tsugunao were chosen to represent the team at the qualifiers and steps strongly the ground, telling Yuichi to follow him to the meeting with the other members.

Later all the members gathers and Shoukichi that during the next four days they will start the training camp and that if anyone do not feel well or injury himself they can tell and not overdo it. He also states that the training serves as a selection of the six regular members for the incoming Inter High. The third year also states that the menu for the training camp is running the total of 1000km and that they will have a electronic scoreboard to check their progress and chips installed on their bicycles to track their progress in the scoreboard. At last, Shoukichi reveals there is a requirement for the participants of the training to participate of it. Instead of some members having handcaps to develop themselves individually, they decided to not do it and let them do it if they freely want to but the participants must choose a partner to ride in pairs and use stickers in their helmets in order to identify themselves. As the meeting ends, the members go after others in order to get their pairs. Toyoka goes after Issa and asks him to be his partner while Ryuhou does not arrive, which the second year accepts while stating anyone is fine as long as Ryuhou is not there. Sadatoki go after his brother to ride together with him, but Terufumi denies, apologizing and asking him to go with someone else. Sadatoki is shocked with the reply, but understands that his brother is doing it in order to go to the Inter High. Terufumi then moves to Shunsuke and asks him to be his partner, which he accepts after seeing how serious his eyes was. The first year Omihata also becomes a pair with the fellow first year Tomihiro.

The training camp starts and all the participants at the moment start to ride the course. The first year Tsugunao talks with Renta about how riding the 1000km is impossible and that during the trip he does from Chiba to Aomori with his family they travel 700km, 300km less than the whole course. He also states that this is a race that they have opponents to fight and that they are being tested. Yuichi approaches Tsugunao and says that it is impossible for them staying at the top six of the training camp if they have to race against the second and third years. However, Tsugunao does not agree with Yuichi points and the first year says that they might have a chance due to the requirement set for the training camp. Tsugunao and Renta reaffirm the formation of their duo with the "NakaRoku" (Naka of Tsugunao's surname KiNaka and Roku of Renta's surname Rokudai) stickers on their helmets. Yuichi then stares the two first years who were chosen for the preliminars and tells his parter Nogaki that they can not afford to lose. The other first years then start to talk about a strategy of cooperating between them and try to survive together the hard race that is about to happen. The first year Toyoka, that is around the other first years, wants to asks his partner Issa something.

The other first years then notice that the second year Issa is paired up with Toyoka which have the "KabuMura" (Kabu of Issa's surname Kaburagi and Mura of Toyoka's surname Murakami) stickers on their helmets and makes a fuss about it, thinking that their partners were supposed to be only first years. Toyoka tells them that he did not get good results in the First Year race and that he did regret the moment that Tsugunao wanted to rise their pace in order to make Renta fall behind and he denied, saying that the pacing was good and he was a good guy at the time. Toyoka, angry with the fact that Renta managed to be chosen as one of the members for the preliminars after dropping out of the first year race, swore that he would not show mercy with anyone while opening his eyes. The first year then asks his parter Issa to raise the pace and get ride of those who get in their way. Issa instantly speeds up and leaves the pack of first years behind. Toyoka manages to keep up with his speed because he knew the timing of his attack and he was close enough to cut the air resistance. The first year then looks back and sees no one behind him, making him happy with it and celebrating that he might go to the Inter High after defeating the second and third years. Toyoka then notices the sound of wheels at his side and looks, seeing that Tsugunao and Renta managed to keep up with them and getting annoyed with it.

Both pairs enter the climbing section of the CSP and do not attack each other for a while, finishing eventually the first lap of the training camp together. While Tsugunao and Renta are distracted talking about the difficult of the training camp and checking if there were any first and second years behind them, Toyoka and Issa took the opportunity to attack again.
